It's because they're not Phillips screws! They're "Japanese Industrial Standard" or "JIS" screws. And because Phillips drivers are designed to "cam-out" at a certain torque, when they're used on a JIS screws it just tears-up them up. See those dots on the heads of the screws in the photo, that's what identifies a JIS type screw.
